2009 marks our tenth year in BMX. When SNAFU entered the game, Odyssey was hibernating, Fit wasn?t born yet, Dave Mirra was just hitting his prime, and Primo was on top of the world. What a difference a decade makes.
Today, Odyssey is rocking, but dozens of fresh brands are knocking on their back door. Fit riders drive modern style, and Dave Mirra just drives. The X Games leading all-time medal winner has podiumed in four events (vert, park, mega ramp and now rally cars), so he deserves a break and our respect. You can?t innovate for 15 years the way Dave has without serious love for the sport.
Speaking of love, what about us? Well, we keep doing our thing, even when that thing isn?t the trendiest or most popular. Brakeless street riders laughed when we built the best cable detangler in the world. Now everyone with barspins and tailwhips in his bag of tricks runs a SNAFU Mobeus and AstroGlide cable. If you don?t, you?re out. Contrary to the fashion Nazis who spend more time on their computers than they do on their bikes, brakes are in. Just ask Fly, Eclat, Revenge, Odyssey, Tektro and every other company that makes levers, cables, U-brakes and neon pads. For the record, we never stopped making this stuff, and we never stopped making it better. Instead of defending our honor on message boards, we just work with our team riders on new products like our Sanford, Malcolm and Sterly tires, Morgan Wade?s Captain stem, our sub-two-pound UL Race Fork, Jeremie Infelis? J.R.I. handlebar, and Dave?s brand-new Mirracle grip.
In ten years we?ve pulled some big ones, and we?ve busted our ass. For instance, we?re still trying to wrap our heads around the 3-inch seatpost. If you really want a tiny seatpost, isn?t it cheaper to cut off your old one with a hacksaw? Our team riders said no, so now we now make our lightweight, fully adjustable J-Bar in two lengths. Some people say we dragged our feet on the color game, but we?ve made up for it with this year?s line. Let?s just call it a shitload of rainbows and leave it at that. The Pivotal seat is another area where some people say the game passed us by. There?s a reason why we didn?t jump on that bandwagon, and it?s this: at least four companies we know of (us included) are taking seats to the next level by stealing a technology that?s been around for 30 years?the Uni Seat. Our one-piece seat with integrated post will be out early next year, and it?ll join other great seats in this category from Fly, KHE, and God only knows who else. Bottom line: the seatpost as we know it is almost dead. Long live the adjustable seatpost!
To everyone who believed in us the first ten years, thanks for your commitment. To everyone who?s riding with SNAFU for the first time, thanks for giving us a chance. Here?s to another decade of free thinking and fun.

Add to myYahoo!Taj wrote up a cool retrospective piece about the red rails in Austin on his Ride blog. I love shit like this about old street spots. Imagine what Aaron Ross would do on those things today?
